Confronting Racially Biased Policing Practices

Working with the national ACLU and the ACLU of Milwaukee, the firm represents the plaintiffs in Collins v. City of Milwaukee, a federal civil rights action against Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Police Department, and the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission arising out of their failure to ensure racially unbiased policing practices. In 2018, the parties reached a settlement requiring the Defendants make measurable progress toward constitutionally acceptable policing practices. The Plaintiffs have played an active role in monitoring the Defendants’ compliance with the settlement agreement ever since. Because of a demonstrated track record of non-compliance, the Plaintiffs continue to demand more meaningful reform efforts. The parties are exploring potential steps forward.
