Gilbert LLP recently made a strategic decision to expand its practice into the complex and growing field of healthcare provider reimbursements.
This field meshes naturally with Gilbert’s core strengths in the areas of insurance recovery and complex litigation, including antitrust litigation and multi-district litigation. The practice focuses on helping medical providers large and small and their patients recover the reimbursements they deserve from insurance companies.
This expansion continues a period of innovative growth for Gilbert. Over the past several years, the firm has built or expanded its practices in insurance recovery, mass tort, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, and litigation finance and has expanded its practice support in analytics and legal technology.
“Gilbert is consistently exploring ways to both broaden and deepen the legal expertise we offer our clients,” said Kami Quinn, Gilbert’s Chair. “We direct our lawyers’ unmatched insight not only to every legal problem we confront, but towards expanding the solutions we can offer clients and increasing the efficiency by which we can offer them.”
The Healthcare Provider Reimbursement practice will be led by Matt Lavin, who comes to Gilbert from Arnall Golden Gregory (“AGG”) where he was a Healthcare and Commercial Litigation partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Matt previously served as an associate at Gilbert from 2003-2005. Two additional attorneys who worked with Matt at AGG have also joined Gilbert to bolster the new practice.
The new practice embarks at Gilbert with several hundred clients, including large health systems, hospital staffing companies, individual physician practices and healthcare professional associations. In addition, Matt and other Gilbert partners will oversee the Multi-District Litigation (“MDL”) that aims to end payor price fixing of out of network health care services nationwide.
Gilbert is well known for negotiating insurance recovery disputes to secure settlements that surpass client expectations. That ability to settle advantageously is available only when paired with the very real willingness to fight through litigation for full vindication of clients’ recovery rights when an advantageous settlement is not forthcoming. Gilbert’s litigators are always ready for those opportunities.
The Gilbert Healthcare Provider Reimbursement practice will enforce laws requiring medical and behavioral health treatment coverage, serving healthcare providers who have been wrongfully denied payment for services, and patients or policyholders denied medically necessary treatment. Matt and the Healthcare Provider Reimbursement team at Gilbert will continue to tackle significant issues in high-stakes cases, representing providers against insurance companies on underpayments, fraudulent medical necessity denials, and other reimbursement-related matters in state and federal courts. They also have a history of success in suits against cost-containment vendors who underprice the value of out-of-network claims.
“As we celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2026, Gilbert never stops looking forward,” Quinn said. “Building a new healthcare practice comes from the same spirit that launched this firm: we seek opportunities, capitalize on them, strive for excellence, and exceed client expectations. Matt and his team will fit seamlessly into that mold and we will continue to grow together.”
